April 02, 2003SproingNothing really too exciting to report, really. I switched both my checking and savings accounts over to new types of accounts yesterday morning, and am thinking about accepting a 0% interest credit card offer. Not that anyone in the world (except me) cares about those things. House calls continue to be busy. I've had either a house call or meeting every night since last Monday. The problem with these latest house calls is that most of them are not easy fixes. Some of them I haven't even been able to solve quite yet, even though I've spent many hours troubleshooting the problem. It's frusterating. I feel like I'm losing my touch. Printers that won't print. OSX that won't install. Pdfs that can't be made. Wireless networks that drop in and out of existance. They're all taunting me. "Haha, Jeff. You can't fix us, you loser." Still waiting for our test bunny Apple XServe to arrive here at work. We're evaluating new server solutions and I have been able to convince Apple to send me a demo XServe to beat & bang on (evaluate the performance of the product). We'll see how it stands up to server solutions from other major companies that we're considering, like Sun. I think most of the others here in ITS aren't taking the XServe seriously. These are the folks that still question why we use Macs at all here at Martin. These are the folks who think the only solutions come from Redmond, WA. These are the folks who refer to Apple's operating system as "MAC". I hope to seriously surprise them. I hope the XServe doesn't let me down. Posted by Jeff at April 2, 2003 11:31 AMComments
Yes, our Msoft special ops are trying to overthrow the people how are still in the dark ages (Apple). You will fall, we even are working for the inside. It's not going to be long. Posted by: Msoft ops at April 2, 2003 12:35 PMDude, that's the biggest link I've ever seen! :) heh heh..... Posted by: Top at April 2, 2003 12:51 PMWhoops. Posted by: The 1D10T Author at April 2, 2003 01:52 PMXServe looks sweet. But it just looks sweet. Price/power don't seem all that sweet in comparison to most PC-based servers. Posted by: Brian at April 2, 2003 02:25 PMAh man I liked the half page link. Posted by: Eric at April 2, 2003 02:30 PMOk Brian, show me a server that IS priced in the same range that delivers exceptional performance over the XServe. I'm not saying that there isn't one out there, because I don't doubt that there might be. I just wonder where you get your facts to back up your statement that it is overpriced and underpowered. OS X intigrates will with Windows so it could be a file server. Mac applications for development would work, but what else can you run on a server like this? Do have to say it looks pretty cool!
