May 30, 2001A little high, a little low..Pretty depressing day today. I spent the second half of the day helping some of my fallen comrades in the Interactive department download and backup their data from our file servers before they leave permanently. Apparently, someone from high above in the company decided that these people might be a threat to our computer systems and ordered that their email accounts and server logins be disabled as of yesterday's announcement. While walking over to survey the "damage", many of the former employees were at their desks, gathering up their stuff. They all expressed a need to get their data from the servers so that they could add their Martin Agency work in their portfolios. So, I talked it over with one of the Interactive department managers and ITS people and finally worked out a compromise so that they could retrieve their data from the server. Little did I know that I would be sitting around "babysitting" these folks for the rest of the day. I watched files copy and CDs burn for the next 4 hours. I was so excited at one point that I think my head actually hit the desk. But, I'm happy, because I know how important this was for these people. Still no tail lights. The guy actually emailed me this morning and said that he was going to call me sometime today. It's 10:55pm and the phone isn't ringing. Why am I surprised? Also, I forgot to mention yesterday..I have been told that I've been approved to be sent to MacWorld New York! WOO HOO! The ITS managers weren't sure if the current financial conditions within the company would allow me to to go to the big show, but after 3 new business "wins" in the last 3 weeks, it looks like I'm headed to New York in July!! I'm really excited, if you can't tell. I'll finally get to the chance to attend a LIVE Stevenote and walk around the show floor and talk to folks from Microsoft, Adobe, and many other companies. The whole show looks like it's going to have a strong focus on OS X, so this is going to be a great chance for me to learn about Apple's new technologies. I can't wait. But, I have to admit: I'm a little apprehensive about going to New York City by myself. I just have to pretend that I know what I'm doing and nobody will be able to tell that I don't...right? A bridgewater boy in New York City? Oh I wish I could follow you around with a camcorder. This should be good. :) Hope you're not driving/renting a car. You think Tysons, Corner, VA is insane? Ha! Stay tuned... Jeff, I want to commend you on talking to your higher-ups about letting the interactive team get their things. What you did today was the best thing that has happened to these people all week. I'm sure they'll never forget you. And although it may have been a boring 4 hours babysitting, it was a tense 4 hours for them, I'm sure. Thinking about all the things they were allowed to get, what they were going to do to make ends meet, where to find a new job, who to talk to... all the horrific things someone has to think about when losing a job were circling their heads. And for them I thank you for taking a few of those burdens from their shoulders. That was really good of you. Posted by: Brian Korte at May 30, 2001 11:44 PMCongrats Jeff!!... just fit in with the New York people and you'll be fine. Wear a fat ... or excuse me ... PHAT leather jacket eventhough it's summer. Make sure you're strapped, AK47 style, a little weed on the side, and develop a little limp on your walk. You have to do something with that hair though. :) Posted by: Paul at May 31, 2001 10:02 AMThat's known to us brothers as the "gangster lean."
