Hiya folks. Sorry for not updating yesterday. I have no excuse, really. I didn't really have a whole lot to talk about, so I decided not to.
Today was a pretty fun day at work. It was pretty slow, which gave me time to play with some things that I've been meaning to play with for a while. One of these was playing around with installing alternative operating systems on Virtual PC. For those of you who don't know, Virtual PC allows you to run any operating systems that run on Intel (or AMD) processors, such as Windows 3.11/95/98/CE/ME/NT/2000/XP/can anybody think of any others?
Jack received a fresh copy of Red hat 7.1, so I stole it and began installing it. I realized that with my drive partitioned in half for OS X, I didn't really have enough drive space for yet another OS on there. So, I decided to install it on an extra G4/400 desktop I had laying around. In the process, I discovered that Connectix is developing a PC version of Virtual PC. I'm sure all of you PC users out there are thinking, "Why would I want to emulate a PC? I've already got one!" Here's why: Let's say you'd like to test out a new operating system. Let's say you have Windows 98, but you'd like to try Win 2000 to see if you like it. Rather that wipe your drive(s) and repartition them so that you can try out another OS, why not just make a VPC disk image and load the new OS on that!? If you decide that you're happier with your current OS, ditch the Virtual PC disk image and no harm is done to your current configuration! I think it's a great solution. And I think Connectix is an exceptional company. Just as a note, my other favorite product from Connectix is their Virtual Gamestation, which allows you to put Sony Playstation games in your CD-ROM drive and play them. And it works really well! I highly recommend Gran Turismo!
By the end of the day, I had convinced Jack that he should use the PC version of Virtual PC for his Red Hat testing. Pretty cool. And I think I convinced Tommy that he should give X-10's DVD Anywhere product a shot for his remote video needs. I feel good knowing that I helped them find cool solutions today. That sort of thing really makes my day. :)
In the next few nights, look for a little story about an eBay predicament that I'm in. And it looks like Apple will announce new iBooks next week..and from the rumors I've read, they're gonna be great. If they come out at the price point that is rumored with the features that people are whispering, it may be time to trade in Olivia's Lombard Powerbook. We'll have to wait and see. It seems like the rumors almost never come completely true.
Enjoy the new survey: What do you think is the most annoying commercial on TV right now?
Posted by Jeff at April 24, 2001 10:57 PMHow could you even list the Britney Spears Pepsi commercials as being most annoying? :) Actually, in all seriousness, I think the one were the kitchen fire gets started is pretty damn funny. As for my pick for most annoying, I'd have to say any of those ads for Miss Cleo's tarot readings.
Posted by: Every guy in America at April 25, 2001 02:07 AMya man, I see the black card which is death to you mr. every guy in america.
I really hate those TRUTH commercials. they're everywhere!! and annoying.
Posted by: Miss cleo at April 25, 2001 10:23 AMSee, the problem is: not everybody sees the same commercials. Somebody in California probably sees a whole different array of commercials than somebody in Kentucky, for example. What the hell is that about a kitchen fire getting started?
Posted by: observer at April 25, 2001 11:06 AMThat Steve guy is asking for trouble. I'm gonna whip him with a wet noodle. TechTV plays that commercial OVER and OVER and OVER again.
Were they going for low budget? Take a look at the chubby kid sometime when you watch that commercial. Watch his lips. He is reading the other guy's line to himself.
God I hate that commercial.
Posted by: Brian at April 25, 2001 11:55 AMObserver, I was talking about one of the Britney/Pepsi commercials. It shows a restaurant kitchen. The cooks are preparing the food when the commercial comes on. They're so distracted by her that they neglect the food and a fire starts. The fire dept. shows up too.
Posted by: Every guy in America at April 25, 2001 09:39 PMI thought the first TRUTH commercial was good. It had a great point and was serious. Now, they're just campy. I especially hate the one where they bring the body bags to the beach. Its not funny at all and is just plain sick.
Posted by: TRUTH commercial hater! at April 25, 2001 09:42 PMYEAH!!.. I say let's all protest against TRUTH, we can throw chewing tobacco's at em, and blow smoke in their faces. While we're there we can put body bags around their building telling them "this are the people that have commited suicide because of your damn commercials." Damn F*ers!
