November 15, 2004Object of my Obsession![]() If you've been watching TV lately, you've probably seen one or two or three of the commercials announcing the arrival of the 2005 Tacoma lineup. The hype surrounding the announcement of this truck has been only second in comparison to the kind of hype that a new Apple product can cause. And I, as a Tacoma enthusiast and website owner, was definitely a driving force behind that hype engine. So, getting the point..Throughout the time when the trucks were supposed to begin hitting the lots, I began to ponder how much fun it would be to actually own one of these new trucks. The problem is, I already have a really nice 2003 double cab model that's customized exactly how I like it. I'd have to say that it's the best truck I've owned so far in terms of being happy with how it drives, rides, etc. But what about the new X-Runner model? Hmm... 245hp. 6-speed manual transmission. 18" wheels. Sport suspension. Super-comfy and updated interior. Oh, and don't forget the body kit. With fog lamps in the front air dam. And a kick-ass looking hood scoop. 2 months ago, I looked at the above things and said "Eh. Not that exciting." Now I'm thinking they are. After driving an 05' Tacoma Prerunner, the interior alone is a great reason to own one. So a few weeks ago, I called one of the local Toyota dealers and asked them if they could find an X-Runner somewhere in the Mid-Atlantic region that they could get their hands on. The sales guy said he'd look around, but it didn't sound promising. "Good", I thought. "Just another excuse for me not to get too excited about it." But then I get a phone call on Thursday of this past week. Here: have a listen. My first thought when I herd that message was "Crap. Now what other excuse can I come up with to not buy this truck?" Here's the meat of the problem: I really want to get one of these new X-Runners. I don't need it. There's no way I'd trade my double cab to get the X-Runner. My brain tells me that it's totally illogical to own two trucks. My finances tell me "....ehhh.....you might be able to swing it..." I've been by the dealership twice since he called. It's not there yet. Here's what I figure: I'll stop by sometime this week when it arrives and drive it. It can't be that great, right? And then I'll go from there. By the way, it's black and I already owned a black truck and hated washing it all the time (although the sales guy said it shouldn't be a problem to trade it for a blue one like you see above). Stay tuned and watch me struggle with myself. Hilarity is sure to ensue. Posted by Jeff at November 15, 2004 12:57 AMComments
I don't know Jeff-ro. The 245hp sounds cool, but the body kit IS kindda cheesy. If your looking for a sporty ride, check out a used Corvette or the like. Any way you look at it, a vehicle is a poor investment. You have a nice Daily Driver anyway, what would be the point of having two daily driver trucks? You could have a pretty damn cool rod for the price of that truck with 445hp. MMMMMMM, Horse Power..... Just think, you could strap your self into an American made Mopar making 500hp, 22's out back sporting some 12" wide Mickey DOT's, rumbling to the tune of duel flowmasters and the smell of racing fuel. You could pull up beside that Taco and say "what's up?" just before you blind his view from the tire smoke off your American badass. Saving the NOS for a Corvette. Posted by: D at November 15, 2004 09:57 AMSomehow I just don't see Jeff choosing a Corvette over a Tacoma.... ;) Posted by: Olivia at November 16, 2004 11:00 AMWhat's a Corvette? :P Posted by: Randy at November 16, 2004 12:54 PMI've had a chance to look at the new Tacoma. I have to admit it's pretty cool. The inside reminds me a lot of my 03 4Runner. I was surprised when my father who is 6ft 5in. fit in without a problem where he runs out of headroom in my truck. I haven't had the opportunity to drive it yet, but I'm sure it will happen soon, they have a white TRD 4x4 and a black one at the dealer that I brought my truck at in Chesapeake. From what we were able to get out of the sales mgr, the truck is about $25.000. My advice, drive the new one to get the experience, hold out a year and see how the new truck holds up with your readers and reviews. See what your options are when the next evolution of the truck comes out. I'm sure by that time, they'll have tinkered with the design and made some improvements. Posted by: Brian R at November 16, 2004 02:20 PMJust call Toyota and tell them you need the new Pick-up for a "long term test" (12-18 months), for a review you are working on with Custom Tacos. Heck, it worked for a buddy of mine who works as a editor for Land Rover Monthly (LRM) on the new LR3 (Discovery)!!!! Not only does he get the truck FREE for 12 months, but he has gained permission to use the truck off-road! Of course he has also agreed to display the truck at no less than 10 Land Rover events within the US and Canada. Posted by: D at November 18, 2004 09:41 AMPost a comment
