An Opportunity for Change

I'm having flashbacks from summer 2003 when Apple offered me a position as a Mac Genius. Ultimately, I decided against switching jobs and have, for the most part, been very satisfied with that decision.

The reason I've been having flashbacks is because I was recently approached a week or so ago and asked if I was interested in moving upstairs to the New Business/AV department to help with technology and presentation-related responsibilities. This would, in my opinion, have a drastic effect on my career path and put me closer to the "front line" of the business side of things here. Very exciting.

However,it would mean giving up lots of things I love about working in ITS. The super-relaxed work environment among other things. Plus, I really enjoy what I do and the people I work with.

So, I have decided to stay where I am. And sometimes I wonder if I've made the right choice. Again.

It's really gratifying to be offered the opportunity to do something different twice in three years. But, I think it also says something about Martin (and my department in particular) that I've turned down both offers. As much as I wish my job in this department felt like it was taking me places, I can't really complain too much.

Dude thats great that you are content with where you are. And it always feels nice to turn down a job. I have gotten a few offers over the years but they were from opportunities I saw as "sinking ships" and I quickly laughed in their faces and ran away.

Sparky's got a point (hi Chris!) but let me toss this out there:

I see that you wrote "I wish my job in this department felt like it was taking me places" and then I see that Apple wanted you as a technician, and that the New Business/AV group wanted you too. From my point of view, these were both opportunities to take you places!

You would not have stayed a Mac Genius for long before you'd find something even better within Apple. I'm certain of it- you're excellent with people, and you know your stuff. You're up on trends, and you're even familiar with outdated things, no longer supported. You'd be perfect to move up within Apple.

Similarly, New Business is (if I recall correctly) the group at your company that does the research, the pitching, the proposing, the romancing....all the creative energy your company represents to prospective clients is funnelled through New Business. I know for a fact you wouldn't have been offered the gig if you weren't such a great employee, so friendly with people, and very helpful with a good attitude.

If you step back a bit, you'll see that those two opportunities CAME from the job you had- both, chances to take you places.

That said, if you are happy with your job, you are very fortunate. Not many people can say that! Some even work their whole lives never finding that thing that drives them. These other opportunities were risks, but risk isn't always a bad thing. I'm glad you're at peace with the decision you made, but hope that when the next one comes around (which, no doubt it will- you're still highly respected in the office), that you consider taking the unknown, because who knows where it will lead you! :-)
