I'm having flashbacks from summer 2003 when Apple offered me a position as a Mac Genius. Ultimately, I decided against switching jobs and have, for the most part, been very satisfied with that decision.
The reason I've been having flashbacks is because I was recently approached a week or so ago and asked if I was interested in moving upstairs to the New Business/AV department to help with technology and presentation-related responsibilities. This would, in my opinion, have a drastic effect on my career path and put me closer to the "front line" of the business side of things here. Very exciting.
However,it would mean giving up lots of things I love about working in ITS. The super-relaxed work environment among other things. Plus, I really enjoy what I do and the people I work with.
So, I have decided to stay where I am. And sometimes I wonder if I've made the right choice. Again.
It's really gratifying to be offered the opportunity to do something different twice in three years. But, I think it also says something about Martin (and my department in particular) that I've turned down both offers. As much as I wish my job in this department felt like it was taking me places, I can't really complain too much.
Boy, I sure wish I could get myself into a better routine for blogging. Aparently my routine now is: Blog. Wait two months. Blog again.
Life has been pretty good for the most part - I can't really complain.
I've been trying to ride the bike to work as much as possible to save on gas. I've gotten quite used to riding in traffic and it doesn't bother me too much.
The tires on the truck are starting to wear pretty badly, and are now louder than ever after rotating them. Not to mention I have a slow leak in one of em'. The real crapper is that they're not cheap to replace - around $170 each. The good news is that after the recent rotating and alignment I achieved the best gas mileage I've had in a long time: 18.5 MPG.
It's definitely been the summer of racing. We've spent many a Friday night out at Southside Speedway (God, have I mentioned that someone needs to help them re-design their site?) watching the good ole' boys trade paint, including our very own MartinEnduro team. Our best finish was a few weeks ago with a 9th place finish. That sounds good, except there were only about 11 or 12 cars left out on the track after a particularly rough race. In other news, the engine in the car, a tired Oldsmobile 307 small block, is just about dead. Hopefully I can convince John (our drive/crew chief) that we can swap the motor this winter.
Fall TV has started, giving me one more excuse to put off doing things that really need to be done. Like re-designing CustomTacos. Like re-designing this site. Like working on a multitude of freelance projects. Speaking of fall TV, I think Olivia and my favorite new show this season is Prison Break. The writing is top notch and very suspenseful. As usual, Lost is very good as well. And, you can't go wrong with Survivor and The Apprentice (Donald's version).
As you may have read on her site, we tore up our back yard a few weeks ago in attempt to start fresh and grow some actual grass back there, as opposed to the weeds that had taken over. Our first attempt was only partially sucessful, but after re-seeding again this weekend, it looks like we're now making some definite progress. Hopefully we can get a healthy, strong base before winter comes.
Progress on our neighborhood is coming along nicely and it's been really exciting to visit about once a week to see new houses going up and people moving in. I'd say there are probably 3-5 houses completed with folks living in them. And the model - which is incredible - is finally open. It's really starting to settle in that we'll be living over there in no time at all. Well, maybe more like 10 months.
