A scare for Smevo

On Sunday, Olivia was programming some new shows on our downstairs TiVo, Smevo, for the upcoming fall TV season when all of the sudden the TiVo rebooted. Uh oh. I've heard many horror stories of hard drives dying characterized most times by an endless reboot cycle.

We patiently waited while Smevo attempted to come back to life, but it continued to reboot. So, I pulled the plug and decided to let it sit for a few minutes and cool down. When I plugged it back in, it powered on, but never showed any video on-screen. Yikes.

A closer look "under the hood" revealed that the unit was powering on, but the hard drives were not getting any power. With a research, I found that a bad supply was likely the cause.

So I paid a visit to the fine folks at Weaknees.com, (they sell parts and upgrades for TiVos of all shapes and sizes) and found a new power supply for around $50.

The power supply arrived yesterday and only took me around 10 minutes to replace. And now all is good again in TiVo land.

For a moment there, I thought it might be time to upgrade to a TiVo HD, but I guess it's not quite time yet.

Hmmm..... Do they sell a part to make a regular TIVo into an HD TIVo? That would be too easy! Then we'd all be doing that!

That would have been a good excuse to, though! heheh. ;)
